This is the first of a weekly feature we're adding on to the always growing and always-changing show that Dobie has dubbed "The Mothership Conntection." Showing our dedication to doing a show in southern Wisconsin, we headed out to an after-show meal at the Brat Stop. While there we continued to discuss ideas for improving the show and what we can do to continue to spread the word. Dobie mentioned his daily blog and that he's got daily readers. Whether they're enjoying their read or not, they're reading everyday. Also, you never know. At some point down the road, I may mention "kumquats" and the right person just happens to Google "kumquats," they come across this site and our show, and suddenly we're an internationally syndicated powerhouse. Anyway, down to business. I haven't looked forward to a show this much since our "Dark Knight" show, which is still my highlight thus far. No only do we have an author of a book I enjoy on, but it's baseball-related and we're in the middle of great seasons (so far) for the Brewers, Cubs and White Sox. How often does that happen? No often is the easy answer to that one. I admit I'm a geek. Right now I'm fighting the urge to jump over to baseball-reference.com to actually answer that question myself. How brilliant is it to take two things that you're interested in and bring them together? In the case of Dan Gordon, it's ghosts and baseball in his book "Haunted Baseball." Work on my next book, "Haunted Strip Clubs," is underway. When writing a ghost story book, it's really advantageous to make the extra effort and set the mood. There's so much mystique and nostalgia surrounding baseball right away, that had to have helped them cut to the chase faster. You don't need for it to be Lou Gehrig to wax poetic. You could talk about Kelly Gruber taking a hard slide into third base or Rick Ankiel's surprising re-emergence with the same Barbara Walters filter on the lens. Our next guest has been a friend of mine for a long while. Looking back, I have no recollection whatsoever how we met, but there's no doubt it revolved around Chicago ghost stories. It may have actually been he who found me to be a guest back when he hosted a television show called "The Unexplained World." That show has since transformed into his bi-weekly radio show of the same name. Ed's a good guy and definitely going places. Teaming up with Ursula Bielski, one of the best in the business and an incredible person, for their Beyond the Veil Tours was a great move. We tend to go off on tangents on the show and that's fine - we go where the conversation leads us. However, I did want to get more insight and promotion for these events. I mean, this past May they and their tour spent the night in the "Villisca Axe House." Believe it or not, the real history of the house is actually worse than you could imagine based on the name. Was this some Lizzie Borden-esque amateur double homicide? No, this is the big leagues: eight people. Yes, eight, were found killed in this house, six of them children. The house has remained unchanged since the time of the murders in 1912 and the crime is still unsolved. At some point we will have Ursula on when she's got some more tours planned and we'll learn all the scary details. On an entirely selfish level, I finally finished cutting my reel together this week. This is something I will send out along with my resume when getting camera operator jobs. Over time, I'm sure more will come out about what I'm up to outside of the radio show, but for now, check out all the spiffy high definition camera work I've been doing! |
