Scott's Post Show Blog 8/17/08
This week was probably the highlight of the show for Dobie. I can honestly say that I’m pretty sure I have heard of Stanton Friedman, but Sam Maranto and Ted Phillips are completely new to me. Looking across the table, you could tell Dobie was having the time of his life. It’s really just like comedy in this sense. Working at comedy clubs for the past eight years now, I’ve naturally seen my share of bad audiences, but I’ve also seen good comics, who have predetermined that they were going to have a bad show, go up on stage with that negativity hanging over them, completely bomb. The audience, consciously or not, can tell in the first minute or two if the comic is waving the white flag of surrender. Conversely, I’ve seen a bad audience get turned around mid-way through the night, maybe even mid-way through a comic’s set. Hopefully, our enthusiasm for the topics is shared with our guest and that transmits over the airwaves to you guys. I thanked Mary Elizabeth Raines for her very fun segment on past life regressions and told her that at some point, we’ll definitely be having her back on the show. I feel like we could go a month with her as our only guest and we’ll still feel like we’re racing the clock to get it all in. She had a blast and thanked us for our intelligent questions – news to us. Maybe having very little background on a topic is a good thing. Dobie and I are sincerely curious about this kind of stuff and love the fact that for two hours a week we get to pick the brains of all sorts of experts. Lastly, we also had an author on. Unfortunately, at one point she mentioned the band Aeromyth and all I could think was, “if cover bands used half the amount of creativity on music that they do on their names, they might be able to actually write some of their own music. There isn’t much I find more boring than a cover band. A few weeks ago I saw an ‘80s cover band called 16 Candles. They didn’t even play up the theme. I figured there would have to be a guy dressed as a Karate Kid, another as Marty McFly, and so on. Instead it just looked like a group of frat guys jumping around the stage, hoping that someone, anyone, in the audience would find it coo l enough that they would get some action after the show. It’s quite doubtful. Now, if you’re just playing around on your own like this:
….completely acceptable. Same goes for outright mockery, like what you'll find from the Dan Band:
Otherwise, I’m gonna have to full agree with Nice Peter:
